Yeah, I know what you’re going to say. “Inktober is over, you idiot. What are you doing?” I don’t care! You’re going to suffer through the rest of my Inktober posts ‘cause I have all these clever little plays and twists and charming and funny back stories on the prompt list’s themes, and neat little designs to test, so there.

Late Inktober Day 14, FIERCE.

The Saravis are an excentric people. White as the snow covered lands they inhabit, they are resilient and fearless, fierce hunters and fighters, trusting their future to the will of the Goddess of Chance and Courage, Saffia, one of the Six. Their humor is sharp as their blades and takes more reserved people off guard, laughing at improper things and making awkward personal remarks with a smile. The saying goes that you shouldn’t fear a Saravi insult, you should fear a Saravi silence.

Inktober Day 11, RUN.

The Riders of Sfarizzde, the Golden Sea, treat their mounts as siblings, establishing a connection which lasts virtually their lifetime. With a lifespan almost similar to humans, Sunddarids, the tall and fast animals of the plains, assign themselves to their riders at a very early age for both, and serve them to the death.
If you can reach the remote western lands of giant grass that compose the Sfarizzde, you’re bound to see a Sfaridanni and her mount riding, in what is to both their happiest moments in life.

Inktober Day 9, SCREECH.

According to the old ones, the Valley of Saabhilla is haunted by a doomed figure, and is to be avoided at all costs.
They tell us that Fizza, once a woman of great beauty and an unrivalled voice, was courted by the god Holoss, who marvelled at her singing. When he asked her to sing for him though, Fizza was so intimidated that she couldn’t utter a sound.
Enraged by her apparent defiance, Holoss kidnapped her and exiled her on the valley, alone, where her voice was transformed into a loud pearcing screech by the valley walls. No one has seen her ever since, but one can still hear her wails in the distance from time to time.

The goddess Aonii, here in Her most bestial demeanour, typical of the Ekoulli carving iconography, blesses a blade on the costumary “Vigil of the Swords”, the eve of every major battle for most of the warring peoples of the Lower Arunal Desert.
The owner of this Elliam sword charms the Agressor with the red Sib flowers, the “Fire Wheels”, favored by Aonii.

Inktober Day 3, POISON.

What started as a dangerous rite of passage for young men among the Luuvi people, became a serious tolerance for the poisonous Gappi fruit, deadly to most people.
While an accidental ingestion of the fruit may result in what neighboring villages describe as “being turned inside out on both ends until you die”, the Luuvi get away with occasional diarrhea and a black tinge around the lips from the Gappi’s dark pulp, which earned them the nickname “Black Mouths”.
This resistance and the dramatic look has a great effect on their adversaries, who say the Luuvi “kiss Death on the lips”.

Alright, we’re back! It’s the Return of The Revenge of Inktober Forever.

Day 2, DIVIDED.

The city of Ullamnia, once the commercial capital of its region, with its vast cereal fields and baked prowess, fell into civil unrest after city officials tried to elect a state bread as its ex-libris.
While some chose the Bonco, a small round bread loved for its chewy inside, others promoted the Canobo, a large bread ring with its famous crispy crust.
Although both breads were served side by side in ancient times, as complements to each other, the tension from the election resulted in the literal divide of the city into two factions, each championing one of the baked goods.
Secretly though, people still occasionally share both breads in their private meals, despite official bans on both sides of the great wall.

Yesterday was a really busy day, so I had to postpone my #Inktober challenge for a day.
This year, the plan is this. 31 drawings for 31 days, following the Inktober prompt list, all about the world of Hanuram. The drawings will be available for sale, and the money will help me fund a sketchbook with the whole Inktober challenge and a few more pieces (more info on that in a couple of days). If you like it, please comment, share and help out.
Here’s Day 1, with the theme “Swift”. Siffus are elusive creatures, invisible to mortal eyes, riding the winds and whispering messages from the gods into unsuspecting ears. Last year, for the first edition of Comic Con Portugal, I managed to do a foldable mini comic of Hanuram, based on an idea a friend gave me. Loved working on it, even if it was done in a couple of days, really liked how it turned out (see first pic).

Trying out the same thing this year, probably with more pages.
I would love to start doing one of these for every convention.

There’s bigger stuff in the works and I’ll probably share it at this year Comic Con.
For now, here’s a preview with some thumbnails for this year’s mini Hanuram.

So here we are.

I know, this webcomic should have started a while back. A year and a half ago to be more precise.
I could atribute the delay to a lot of things, mainly the need to pay my bills, increased freelance work load and comics related collaborations going on since I started working on ideas and concepts for this project.

To be honest, the biggest reason why this comic has been continuously delayed has been the way a fun idea, meant to fill up my time between paid jobs with a creator owned occasional comic, started evolving into something more serious, as it happens when you draw on long time influences and stuff which have always integrated your imagination’s DNA, in my case, classic mythology and world building.

The first concept for Hanuram came from an idea on how to fill those gaps in my schedule with short stories, 4 to 8 pages, one day maybe 16 or 20, if the project gained traction in the meantime. Mostly gags and action sequences, pretty much ripping off the vibe Mike Mignola created on Hellboy’s first shorts, 20 years ago (no shame in admitting it, always steal from the best).
That idea is still there, that’s how the thing is going to unfold, but gradually, the will to build my own world, a world I could have fun in and which fed my love for yarns of heroic lore started asking for more and more detail, one story idea opened up dozens of other ideas and questions, the canvas started widening more and more, and I started feeling I couldn’t just start throwing around short stories without first structuring the core of the world Hanuram lives in, the different places he might visit, the rules of that world, for men, creatures and gods.
So, as much I hate being the guy who breaks promises, I broke them and missed deadlines on this thing.
Not a great feeling, but it was something I felt I had to do, to really know what I was doing.

Cut to now. I still have a lot of blocks to push to get the structure right, but I’m way closer to the start of this thing.
Right now, I’m more confident about what’s going to happen and getting back to the process of bringing this character’s adventures into the light.
The next steps will be posted here, from now on. Stuff like news, sketches, original pieces, process shots and more.
I still have to juggle this project with all the other stuff that will allow me to keep drawing Hanuram getting in more and more trouble everywhere he goes, but things will start picking up speed from now on.
